3 coffee shops that stand out in Bordeaux
Bordeaux is famous for its wine, but if you’re a coffee lover like me, you’ll be happy to know the city has many coffee shops, too many probably.
No offense intended, but I won’t list any Starbucks here, there are way better coffee shops in Bordeaux.
Coffee first.
Then, if you you need a quiet spot to work, a cozy place to relax, or just an excellent cup of coffee, Bordeaux has you covered.
Luckily, Bordeaux’s city center is compact, making it easy to explore its best coffee spots. Here are three standout coffee shops you shouldn’t miss.
1. L’Alchimiste Café Boutique – The Ultimate Coffee Experience
- Address: 12 Rue de la Vieille Tour, 33000 Bordeaux
My favorite, by far. If you take your coffee seriously, L’Alchimiste Café Boutique is the place to be.

This specialty coffee shop is a favorite among Bordeaux locals. Known for its expertly sourced and roasted beans, L’Alchimiste takes coffee to an “art”isanal level.
I sometimes go to L’Alchimiste after the tour to share a good coffee with guests!
No fancy receipe here: espresso, double espresso, capuccino… less than 10 items on the menu.
The space is divided into 2 sections: the main room and a shop where you can purchase some coffee grounds or coffee beans.
They also host workshops, so if you want to deepen your coffee knowledge, this is the perfect spot.

2. Black List Café – Cozy, Chic, and Perfect for Brunch
- Address: 27 Place Pey Berland, 33000 Bordeaux
Black List Café is located in the heart of Bordeaux near the iconic Pey Berland Tower.
The ambiance here is effortlessly cool, minimalist decor, warm lighting, and a laid-back vibe make it the kind of place where you want to linger.
Their brunch is also good, featuring fresh pastries, avocado toasts, and pancakes.
Black List Café won’t disappoint.
3. Café Joyeux – Great Coffee with a Social Mission
- Address: 31 Rue Sainte-Colombe, 33000 Bordeaux
Café Joyeux might not brew the best coffee in Bordeaux. Don’t get me wrong, the coffee is excellent.
But the place is not just a coffee shop. It’s a place with a purpose. That’s why it has the 3rd position in my ranking
The coffee shop employs people with disabilities, offering them a chance to work in an inclusive and supportive environment.
But as I told you, beyond its mission, Café Joyeux also serves some seriously good coffee.
The space is bright, cheerful, and welcoming, with a menu that includes excellent espresso drinks, homemade pastries, and light meals.
Café Joyeux is sure to leave you with a smile.
